The top picture is one of the baby rooms at Cenxi orphanage before the onset of Hope & Grace. (Read previous entry if you don't know what Hope & Grace is.) This picture is fairly typical of a baby room in an orphanage in China. The cribs are often back to back and it is very common for two babies to share a crib. The caregivers or nannies, as they are called, do their best to care for the babies. Due to sheer numbers, however, babies are often prop fed with a bottle and receive minimum hold times, as nannies meet the needs of the many. This was the case at Cenxi orphanage until October 2005.
The picture below the babies are the children who now occupy Cenxi orphanage. There are 52 girls and boys age 4 and over. Because of Hope & Grace, they were able to eliminate the baby rooms, which allowed more room in the orphanage. These boys and girls in the photo are preparing for a singing performance. Maureen, the Hope & Grace coordinator, says when she comes to Cenxi, she likes to take the older children on field trips.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to have more orphanages with sponsorship programs like this?

Very cool! The cribs were just like the ones at Ella's orphanage. It makes me sad to think of her spending so much time there in those cribs (holding pens).
